Battle of the Somme Discovery Day at QUB

Year 9 History students were treated to a special day of learning at Queen’s University on 21 May. The pupils took part in various workshops which explored different aspects of life in the trenches. Experts from Queen’s Geography Department gave pupils the opportunity to explore different maps from the Western Front, helping them to understand the topography of the Battle of the Somme. The pupils also examined the experiences of soldiers in the trenches by looking at letters from the trenches with the support of Queen’s Drama Department. Finally, the experts from the Centre for Data Digitisation and Analysis demonstrated how information and artefacts from WWI are being stored for future use using the very latest technology. The Year 9 students were a credit to the school and all said it was a very interesting day. Our thanks to everyone at QUB who helped to deliver such a new and engaging event.
